Gingivitis and periodontal disease

Swelling, soreness or infection around our teeth is what most people call gum disease.

It comes in two forms:

Gingivitis. Most people suffer from inflammation of the gums at some point, and this is gingivitis – the soft tissue becomes swollen and often bleeds when teeth are cleaned.

Periodontal disease. Gingivitis can turn into periodontal disease if not dealt with, and can ultimately lead to a loss of bone in the jaw, making the tooth loose and drop out.

Gum disease is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. But the good news is that it is treatable and while some damage cannot be reversed, it can often be slowed so that patients can keep their teeth if they follow advice from our dentists or hygienists.

What causes gum disease and how is it treated

A thin film of bacteria called plaque form on our teeth which is the main cause of gum problems. This is why you often hear dental professionals talk about the importance of effective brushing and flossing to remove the build-up of plaque, as it does more than simply damage the surface enamel.

Gum disease seldom causes pain as it develops – unless you get an abscess – meaning it is all too easy to ignore teeth that bleed every time you clean them. However, the ultimate end result can still be a loss of teeth, with all the discomfort, cost, and inconvenience this causes.

Regular visits to the friendly team at Church Lane will mean your dentist or hygienist can keep plaque and any associated gum disease under control.
